The Kossak dynasty
Three generations of painters from one family, with the Kossakówka in Kraków as their home.
Juliusz Kossak
1824–1899Born in Nowy Wiśnicz. He studied in Lviv, Paris and Munich. From 1862 to 1868 he was artistic director of the Warsaw weekly Tygodnik Ilustrowany.
A master of watercolour: horses, battle scenes and the life of the gentry. In 1869 he settled in Kraków, in the villa later called the Kossakówka.
Wojciech Kossak
1856–1942Son of Juliusz, born in Paris on New Year's Eve 1856. He studied in Kraków, Munich and Paris. From 1895 to 1902 he worked in Berlin for Emperor Wilhelm II.
A painter of battles and portraits, from 1912 a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and co-creator of battle panoramas. Father of Jerzy, of Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska and of Magdalena Samozwaniec.
Jerzy Kossak
1886–1955Son of Wojciech, grandson of Juliusz. He was born and died in Kraków.
He painted Napoleonic scenes and battles of the Legions, horses, hunts, folk subjects and portraits. He worked in his father's studio and often repeated his father's themes.
Not sure which Kossak? Paintings by Jerzy and Wojciech are often confused, because the son worked in his father's studio and repeated his motifs. You can choose "Not sure" in the form. Photographs of the signature and the reverse help settle it.
