Jan Tarasin
1926–2009He was born on 11 September 1926 in Kalisz. From 1946 to 1951 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under the painters Zbigniew Pronaszko and Wacław Taranczewski and the printmakers Andrzej Jurkiewicz and Konrad Srzednicki.
His poster Bumelant (The Shirker, 1952) made his name. For the cycle of lithographs Dom (House) he won first prize at the 1st Kraków Print Biennale in 1960. In time he arrived at the cycle of "objects", in which things become signs and symbols of immaterial meanings.
In 1962 he joined the Kraków Group. In 1967 he moved to Warsaw, where from 1974 he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts and from 1987 to 1990 its rector. He was awarded the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1997). He died in Warsaw on 8 August 2009.
