Ryszard Winiarski

1936–2006

He was born on 2 May 1936 in Lwów (now Lviv). From 1953 to 1959 he studied precision mechanics at the Warsaw University of Technology, and from 1958 to 1966 painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, in the studio of Aleksander Kobzdej.

He joined constructivism with the theory of chance and created a mathematical system for generating forms: the arrangement of black and white fields on the canvas was decided by drawing lots. The "Area" and "Games" series grew out of this method. In 1987 he began making geometric compositions of lit grave candles, Geometry, or a Chance for Meditation (Geometria, czyli szansa medytacji).

He taught at the Warsaw Academy and was its pro-rector from 1985 to 1990. He won the Jan Cybis Prize (1995). His works are in collections including the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź and the National Museum in Kraków. He died on 4 December 2006 and is buried in the Powązki Military Cemetery in Warsaw.
