Jan Lebenstein
1930–1999He was born on 5 January 1930 in Brześć nad Bugiem (Brest), to a Jewish family. From 1948 to 1954 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under Artur Nacht-Samborski. He made his debut in 1955 at the Arsenał exhibition in Warsaw, with nostalgic landscapes of the city's outskirts.
In 1959 he won the Grand Prix at the first Paris Biennale of young artists and settled in France for good. From the axial figures he moved, in the 1960s, to a bestiary drawing on the myths of Assyria, Babylon and Egypt. He illustrated Orwell's Animal Farm and books of the Bible. He died in Kraków on 28 May 1999.
